Trying something new can be nerve-wracking – and massage is no exception. But knowing what to expect can make your first visit feel completely stress-free. Here’s a breakdown of what typically happens at your first appointment:
When you arrive, you'll be asked to fill out a short intake form. This helps your therapist understand your health background, any injuries or pain areas, and what you’d like to get out of the session. You’ll then have a brief conversation with your therapist to go over your goals and preferences – for example, whether you want a full-body massage or want to focus on specific problem areas.
Next, you’ll be given privacy to undress to your comfort level. You’ll lie on the massage table and cover yourself with a sheet. Your therapist will only uncover the area they’re working on at any time – you’ll always be appropriately draped and respected.
During the massage, they’ll check in with you about the pressure and make adjustments if needed. You're always encouraged to speak up if anything doesn’t feel right – it’s your session.
Afterwards, take your time getting up, drink some water, and allow yourself a few minutes to ease back into your day. You might feel a bit floaty or deeply relaxed, and that’s a good sign – your nervous system got the message.
